After a very busy day at Cannon Park for Ladies Day, it was back to the hotel for a super quick makeover to get ready for the Annual Amateurs Ball. It is a black tie event that only opened up to the public a few years ago. Each year there is a special musical guest which traditionally would be unveiled during the evening. This year there was a break from tradition and Jessica Mauboy was announced as the special guest in the lead up to the event. As well this year the Amateurs Ball moved locations to be held at the Esplanade. The dance floor was built over water and the whole event was to be held entirely outdoors. It would have been perfect had the weather decided to co-operate. All day at the races the clouds were threatening to rain, but they held off… until the outdoor ball.

As everyone arrived at the ball in their gowns and suits we were handed a plastic poncho. It had been raining on and off since the late afternoon. It was quickly suggested that one poncho would be needed for the chair and another to put over your body as the chairs and their covers were a soggy mess. Arriving at the table I had to tip the water from my place setting and tuck the tablecloth up so my dress wouldn’t get wet. Very soon it started to rain again and everyone was soon looking the same covered in blue plastic. It probably sounds a bit doom and gloom and the mood at the event was a bit peculiar. The food had started trickling out and as everyone started eating and the drinks started flowing the evening took a turn. Looking around it was hilarious- everyone was in their best clothes trying to eat in the rain covered in plastic! A situation is what you make of it and everyone was in the mood to party! The music was pumping and there was no choice but to hit the dance floor. There was a spectacular fireworks display which lit up the sky and soon it was time for Jessica Mauboy to sing. I’ve never seen Jessica perform before and she was incredible- singing for 90 mins barely stopping to catch her breath. It was a fantastic and energetic performance with me spending most of it singing and dancing along in the rain. My dress was trashed and my feet hurt but I was sad when the night came to an end. However as my little group was getting back to the hotel Jessica Mauboy and her band were heading into the same hotel and Jessica happily obliged our request for a photograph.

Saturday morning came around too quickly and it was time to go to the track again for Cup day. Fashions on the Field was back on in the Garden Party, this time with different categories- Under 25 Ladies, Open Ladies, Best Dressed Couple, and Open Mens. The judges had a difficult time again trying to agree on some of their winners, and there was some fabulous fashion to be seen. The contestants really understood what the judges were looking for and what dressing up for the races means. It was by no means easy for the judges so some of the heats took a little extra time for the judges to make sure they had seen each contestant and their outfit properly.

I had the most amazing time again in Cairns getting to experience another Amateurs Carnival. The hospitality that was extended to myself and the warm welcome that Craig and I received was so lovely and made the whole trip so enjoyable and so much fun. We were both looked after very well and I cannot thank everyone involved enough for their kindness. All the hard work paid off for another fantastic and successful Cairns Amateurs Carnival!
