Cairns Amateurs Day 2 otherwise known as Ladies Day started out early. Before the gates officially opened at Cannon Park, I welcomed the day with drinks and canapes near the mounting yard at a meet and greet event. Racing experts Steve Hawkins and Tony Clements shared their knowledge with the crowd by talking through their tips for the day. The main attraction of the morning however was the 2016 Cairns Amateurs trophy which I was able to hold and take photos with.

Soon after it was time to head to the air conditioned comfort of the Ireland RAM Garden Party where the QT Port Douglas Fashions on the Field was held, and my judging duties would commence.

The first category to take to the stage was Gold Class Ladies (women aged over 50). As the competition got underway, I was so happy seeing lots of beautiful colour and well put together outfits.

The winner was Jeni Bombardieri wearing Alice McCall and millinery she had created herself.

The next category was the Open Ladies section. This was tough to judge as there were many women that had obviously put a lot of time and effort into their outfits and looked great. This is just a snippet of some of the entrants.

The winner was Gracyn Masterson wearing Sonlia.

During the day from the Garden Party a winner was selected for Best Millinery and over the carnival each Fashions on the Field Judge was asked to select a ‘Judges Pick’ to receive a special prize. I chose a young lady who caught my eye with her outfit and striking millinery, but chose not to enter FOTF.

Once the FOTF competiton was over it was time to see some horses

After leaving the track and heading back to my hotel, it was time for a speedy change to go to the ANZ Cairns Amateurs Ball!

Held at the Cairns Cruise Liner Terminal the Black Tie event did not disappoint! There were fireworks, performances from the Koi Boys (from TV show ‘The Voice’) and food and drink for all. I danced until my feet hurt and didn’t want to go to bed.

Stay tuned for the day 3 wrap!
